Mostly, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz plays city cheerleader on his blog, spotlighting city issues, awarding kids' achievements, welcoming President Obama and chronicling his ride with Lance Armstrong. But he's not afraid to snarl at perceived opponents, either. A sampling:

• "This morning's Wisconsin State Journal story on the Central Library has no journalistic basis for existing." (July 17) The State Journal stood by its story and Isthmus, the city's weekly alternative newspaper, came to its defense in a rebuttal, "Mayor Cieslewicz is wrong about Madison Central Library."

• "How am I trampling on democracy? I am appointing people to committees who I want on committees." (May 2009) In response to citizens questioning his committee appointments.

• "What remains now is unreasonable opposition from a slim minority that vows to use every tool at their disposal ... to block this project." (October 2009) In response to opponents of the Edgewater hotel redevelopment.
