The gener8tor business accelerator that operates in Madison and Milwaukee is the 14th best start-up booster in the U.S., according to a survey Tuesday.

Annual rankings were released at SXSW (South by Southwest), in Austin, Texas.

"We're thrilled to be recognized as a top 15 accelerator," co-founder Troy Vosseller said.

The 2014 Seed Accelerator Rankings Project was directed by professors Yael Hochberg, Rice University, and Susan Cohen, University of Richmond. They base their decisions on data that includes the valuations of the accelerators' portfolio companies; how much money the start-ups raised; survival rates; and how satisfied the companies were with the program.

This is the fourth year of the startup rankings, and the first year that gener8tor participated.

The Wisconsin program, started in June 2012, has 28 graduates that have raised more than $40 million and created more than 300 jobs, gener8tor said.

"This ranking reflects the tremendous accomplishments of the entrepreneurs we've had the privilege to invest in over the past 32 months," co-founder Joe Kirgues said.
