Wisconsin Power & Light has completed the purchase of the Riverside power plant in Beloit for $400 million, it was announced Wednesday.

WPL, of Madison, has been buying 500 megawatts of capacity from the 600-megawatt, natural gas-fired power plant since it was built by Calpine Corp. in 2004.

WPL, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corp., provides electric service to approximately 459,000 customers and natural gas service to approximately 180,000 customers in central and southern Wisconsin.

Houston-based Calpine generates more electricity than any other independent power producer in the U.S., with 92 power plants in operation or under construction.
