Whenever possible, Capital Newspapers prefers preprinted material to be brick stacked, bulked on pallets, with sufficient corrugated sheet stock between layers. Use lifts (stacks) as large as possible while maintaining bundle integrity (all sides square). Generally, a lift from 4" to 6" will work best.

Single sheets

  • Minimum thickness is .007".
  • Preferred size range is 5" x 7" to 11" x 11". Smaller or larger preprints may be acceptable with a higher allowance for waste and/or slower throughput.
  • Bristol or vellum finishes are preferred.
  • High-gloss, coated stock or thinner paper may generate a higher waste factor and/or slower throughput.

Folded single sheets

  • No Z-folded products, even if tabbed.
  • Tri-folded products are acceptable; no tabbing is necessary.

Tab or broadsheet formats

  • Newsprint is preferred, but glossy or coated stocks are also acceptable.
  • May be glued and trimmed, or stitched and trimmed.
  • Preferred size range is 5" x 7" (with 7" feeding edge; see below) to 11" x 11". Smaller or larger preprints may be acceptable with a higher allowance for waste and/or slower throughput.

Quarterfolds

  • Products should be folded only the number of times required to get within the maximum size guidelines. Additional folds (especially at higher page counts) create greater bundle instability.
  • Tabs and broadsheets are usually preferable to quarterfolds.

When in doubt about any of the above guidelines, please contact the Packaging Center.
