Eight bagel sandwiches. Three reporters. One competition.
In what's become a tradition as part of Madison Chef Week, some of the city's top chefs created specialty bagel sandwiches for the 4th Annual Gotham Bagel Sandwich Contest.
The eight sandwiches are served for one day only, meaning that Gotham was packed with customers eager to try Tory Miller's Bobby Flay Slayer or Evan Dannells take on a pizza bagel.
The winner (determined by who sold the most bagels) got $200 to donate to the charity of their choice.
But the chance to try these super-limited sandwiches made us all winners, really. Cap Times political reporter Jessie Opoien and features editor Rob Thomas joined food writer Lindsay Christians in sampling all eight sandwiches. Here's how Lindsay covered it on Instagram:
Three journalists (@rthomas1968 @jessieopie). Eight bagels. One competition. 1. The Flay Slayer from @tmills608 2. A passle of sandwiches (amazing vegan Brighton Beach from @greenowlcafe at front, back left @piginafurcoat w/ porchetta & runny egg, back right Jessie and Rob's top pick: the Karaage Kid from Jed Spink at @red.madison) 3. @gilbertaltschul made a pizza bagel 4. My favorite w/ that aji verde, the sloppy Pollo Borracho bagel from @edannells at @merchantmadison 5. At 7 am there was a crowd waiting outside the door. By midmorning the wait for a bagel was an hour. By 11:15, they'd run out of most types of bagels and were baking more. 6. Gotham owner Joe Gaglio teaches at Madison College & recruited some students to help today. 7. The menu! #madisonfood #bagels #chefweek2018 #macn #madisonareachefsnetwork #bagelcompetition
