A UW-Madison faculty member has died as a result of a crash while biking at the Colorado National Monument, the National Park Service reported.

Stanley Dodson, 65, was riding down Rim Rock Drive on Saturday afternoon when he lost control of his bike. He was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction and died Sunday, the Associated Press reported.

Dodson retired as a zoology professor at the UW-Madison this year, Jeff Hardin, chairman of the zoology department, told the Grand Junction Sentinel on Monday.

"We just celebrated his career; he just recently retired," Hardin said. "So he was just beginning this new phase of his life. That's what makes it particularly tragic in many ways that he died now."
