Talented Madisonians can show off their skills for Ellen DeGeneres on Monday, when the comedian films a segment of her talk show from State Street.
DeGeneres and her dancing shoes won't actually set foot in Madison. The segment will film on the 600 block of State Street, in front of Chipotle restaurant, and DeGeneres will interact via satellite from her Los Angeles studio.
Participants will be filmed in a freestyle talent contest between 6 and 7 p.m. The contest, and DeGeneres' interactions with the contestants, will be broadcast on the show. There is no set air date yet.
"It’s very exciting that 'The Ellen Show' chose to highlight Madison on her show on Monday," said Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4. "When you look at the similar cities that she’s entertained live segments from on her show, Madison is on the smaller scale. The exposure is really exciting."
The show has filmed similar segments in Chicago and Boston recently. In Boston, fans were asked to dress up like a green monster with red socks in order to win World Series tickets. In Chicago, they were encouraged to dress in a way that would make someone's day.
No word on what the prize will be for the Madison episode yet.
City officials reacted as quickly as they could to the show's producers' application for a street use permit, Verveer said.
The 600 block of State Street will be closed and three Metro Transit buses will be rerouted from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. to accommodate filming. The show will pay for all city costs, including the bus rerouting, Verveer said.
