A 21-year-old Madison man suffered a fat lip and swollen cheekbone after allegedly being mugged by three men, including two who were acquaintances of the victim, while on the way to a Halloween party.

The mugging happened about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of Northport Drive on the city's north side.

Madison police said officers went to the apartment building after a woman heard someone yelling for help.

"The victim said he had gone to the building with the three men, thinking they were going to a party," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

When they got to the building's basement, the trio started punching the victim, police said.

"They were trying to steal his wallet, but he was able to maintain control of it," DeSpain said.

The suspects remained at large as of Monday afternoon.
