A Dane County sheriff's deputy from Brodhead is being honored by a national association for his work with young people interested in law enforcement.
Richard Bennett, leader of the Dane County Explorer Post 2125, has been named the National Sheriffs Association Law Enforcement Post Advisor of the Year, according to a news release from the Dane County Sheriff's Office.
Bennett will be honored at the association's summer conference in Nashville in June.
Law Enforcement Exploring is one of several work-related disciplines in the Explorer program, ranging from law enforcement to health careers to aviation.
Exploring is part of the Learning for Life youth program, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America.
Bennett leads 18 to 20 young people from 14 to 20 years old in training in law enforcement, both classroom and scenario-based, as well as in numerous statewide competitions for Law Enforcement Explorer posts from across the state.
In 2011, the post also put in over 1,500 hours of community service, and was honored by President Obama through the President's Volunteer Service Award.
