A man who attracted the attention of Madison police when he was spotted grinding marijuana in Peace Park got into more trouble when a search of his backpack turned up a loaded handgun, police reported.
Jeffrey Wilschke, 29, no permanent address, was tentatively charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting/obstructing and disorderly conduct, and was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and casual possession of marijuana.
He was arrested at about 2 p.m. Monday in Peace Park, 452 State Street.
According to the police report, an officer found a loaded handgun, a couple of knives, women's jewelry, sports trading cards, electronics and other items in Wilschke's backpack.
"The suspect also had a knife and a bag of marijuana in his pockets," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
Police are looking into whether some of the items found in the backpack were stolen.
