Monday morning update: Soglin posts again to clarify that he does not consider his candidacy a good thing, although he notes getting many "words of encouragement."
Madison's two-time former mayor Paul Soglin, who was blogging well before it was cool for Madison mayors to do so, has an entry up today chastising the state Democratic party for not yet having a serious candidate for governor despite Gov. Jim Doyle's early announcement that he would not be running. Their punishment for such disorganization? Soglin says if they don't have a candidate in by Dec. 1, he will run for governor himself.
While it's hard to tell exactly how serious he is, Soglin's candidacy is an idea that's more than a little intriguing. While Soglin's name recognition is probably not that great outside of Dane County, he is certainly plugged into local and state politics and could potentially mount a legitimate campaign.
What do you think Paul Soglin's odds at the governorship would be? What are his main advantages and disadvantages? Would his allegiance to the Cubs and Chicago hot dogs help or hinder a potential run for governor?
