I couldn’t top the Pork Belly Frites, so I decided it was time for dessert. Next up was Saz’s and the Deep-Fried Pretzel-Crusted Brownies on a stick. For your order, you get two rectangular brownies, each about the size of an ice cream sandwich, lightly breaded, with a cup of caramel sauce.
Let’s not beat around the bush — these are good. Shamefully good. I-don’t-want-somebody-I-know-to-see-me-eating-this good. The brownie is soft and chewy, not dry at all, and the pretzel breading is just light enough to add a crunch without being overwhelming.
Sitting on the curb, I ate one and vowed that I wouldn’t eat the second. And I didn’t. Not all of it, anyway.
By that time, it had started to rain, and I was just about ready to go. But I wanted to swing by the Sprecher’s Landing tent, which was doing all kinds of nutty things with root beer and beer. I went looking for a Root Beer Float Cookie, but they were freshly sold out. I instead went for a Beer Cookie.
The soft cookie was dotted with beer chips, beer-infused pretzels and beer-infused popcorn. It seemed like a great way to end a day full of strange and (mostly) wonderful foods at the Wisconsin State Fair.
Your move, Minnesota.
