I am Arthur Kohl-Riggs, and I am running for governor in the Republican primary to restore Wisconsin’s identity as a laboratory of democracy. Wisconsin, the birthplace of the national Republican Party and the home of “Fighting Bob” La Follette, is respected for its strong progressive Republican heritage. Scott Walker’s leadership has thrust Wisconsin into an era of dishonesty, regression, and polarization. Walker has implemented a radical, extremist agenda — driven by special interests — that strays far from the values of clean and open government, honest representation, and social equality upon which the party of Abraham Lincoln was founded. As governor, I will work to foster transparency in our legislative process, honesty with my constituents, and justice for the people of Wisconsin.
Walker sees Wisconsin as a business, and sees himself as its chief executive officer. I, on the other hand, intend to lead Wisconsin as a facilitator of a true representative democracy to highlight what can be accomplished when an elected official prioritizes the input and concerns of his or her constituents over those of big-moneyed interests.
Walker’s corporate-driven philosophies of austerity and secrecy have created a lack of accountability for those in office, as well as a culture of greed, divisiveness, and outright hostility. Lincoln would be outraged by the inappropriate relationship between our current elected officials and corporate interests. He warned us: “Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed.”
We live in a society in which you are only as free as the quality of health care that you can afford, and that is shameful. No one should lose her home as the result of an unexpected illness. All too often people are faced with the untenable choice between maintaining their health and providing for their families. I believe that health care is a human right. In an effort to shift away from Wisconsin’s current profit-driven health care system, I would work to implement affordable and accessible single-payer health care.
Moving forward beyond Walker will be one of the greatest challenges our state has ever faced. I wholeheartedly believe that Wisconsinites can rise to the occasion. In addition to honesty, transparency, and justice, I plan on protecting Wisconsin’s three greatest resources: an excellent public education system, an enviable natural environment, and a dedicated workforce with restored access to collective bargaining rights.
I love Wisconsin for what our state has historically valued and for how tirelessly we will fight against those who do not have the people’s best interests at heart. Walker is a puppet, a fake Republican beholden to corporate special interests. The only special-interest group that I will answer to is the people of Wisconsin. As Lincoln said, government should be “of the people, by the people, for the people.” On May 8 vote for Arthur Kohl-Riggs, the real Republican.
A message to Gov. Scott Walker: This is a request for a public debate. The people of Wisconsin deserve a meaningful discussion about how best to move our state forward. The suggested topic: What is “it”? And how is it “working”?
