Dear Editor: Earlier this month, the House of Representatives voted in favor of an anti-choice amendment offered by Reps. Stupak, D-Mich., and Pitts, R-Pa., to the Affordable Health Care for America Act. The amendment would impose unprecedented restrictions on insurance coverage for abortion, blocking women in the new system from purchasing a plan that covers abortion even when using their own money.
The Stupak-Pitts amendment goes far beyond existing law and represents a radical departure from the status quo. More than 85 percent of insurance plans currently available in the private market offer abortion coverage.
The House health reform bill would eliminate access to coverage currently available to women. Americans agree that women should be able to decide on the health care options they purchase using their own money. And Americans agree that women should not lose ground in health reform.
As the Senate takes up health care reform, we must now call upon Sen. Kohl and Sen. Feingold to reject any similar effort to block women from using their own personal, private funds to obtain insurance that covers abortion.

Among the tributes sent to a website after Neha Suri, a UW-Madison junior, died of meningitis was a note from a Wisconsin mother named Gail Bailey. She is a member of Moms On Meningitis, which works to raise awareness about the disease.
