Dear Editor: The Koch brothers are the “financial engine of the tea party,” a Mitt Romney campaign memo said. Just who are the Koch brothers and what is their agenda?

David and Charles Koch have a combined wealth of over $35 billion. They will reportedly spend over $400 million to try to defeat President Obama and elect Republicans who will support their personal agenda. The Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity and other Koch-funded super PACs including the NRA’s want to accomplish the reduction or elimination of social programs such as Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security and to gut environmental regulations while cutting taxes for the rich.

The Koch brothers’ father was a founder of the John Birch Society. This radical anti-communist, anti-socialist organization lied to the public and its members to the extent of charging that Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson were all at one time or another part of a communist conspiracy. The lesson to the Koch brothers was that it is OK to say anything, even if it’s outrageous and false, as long as it furthers your cause.

In my opinion you should not believe anything the tea party, Americans for Prosperity or the NRA says about our president.
