Dear Editor: Congratulations to Charles Hua and the members of the West Green Club at West High School .

The club has established a goal of installing 100 solar panels at West High School by the end of 2018. They have also thrown down the gauntlet to Madison Gas & Electric to raise its goal of 30 percent renewables by 2030 to 100 percent renewables by 2030.

The Madison School District has over 50 elementary, middle and high schools, the large majority of which have flat roofs ideally suited for solar panels. Let's build on the initiative of Charles and the West Green Club members by setting a goal of installing solar panels on the majority of these schools by 2020.

Many utilities are already exceeding MGE's 2030 renewable energy goal. For example, Mid-American Energy, based in Des Moines, Iowa, has a vision of providing 100 percent renewable energy to its Iowa retail customers. When projects underway right now are completed in 2021, the company will be 95 percent of the way toward this goal. Mid American's performance makes MGE’s 2030 goals pale in comparison.
