Dear Editor: Patients without insurance needing the care of specialists from neurology to podiatry would have no care options without the BSP Clinic — a small, free health care clinic, the only one of its kind in the area. Staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, technicians and interpreters, it provides exceptional care to a population with very limited options. Volunteers from many health care institutions come together and have diagnosed and treated a range of illnesses from kidney failure to cancer. The clinic serves approximately 120 patients per month and that number will continue to increase given current uncertainties with health care.

The clinic has operated under the umbrella of the Dean Foundation for over 15 years, but that will change at the end of the month when that research operation is moved into SSM. As a result, the clinic is transitioning to a new community-based, independent not-for-profit organization. We are in need of immediate funds to continue caring for our patients.

I work as a volunteer Spanish interpreter for the clinic and get to see up close just how much of an impact these services are having on people’s lives.

As you make your year-end gifts, please give to the BSP Free Clinic by sending a tax-deductible gift to 2711 Allen Blvd., Middleton, WI 53562.

Stay healthy during this holiday and help our patients do the same.
