The experience of rescuing a dog lost in the wake of Hurricane Katrina spurred Jenny Pavlovic to write her first book, "8 State Hurricane Kate: The Journey and Legacy of a Katrina Cattle Dog."

Five years ago, Hurricane Katrina roared into New Orleans, altering the landscape for both people and animals. Pavlovic, a Madison native now living in Afton, Minn., went to New Orleans to help, rescuing a dog found on a rooftop and bringing her back through eight states to Pavlovic's home in the Midwest.

Pavlovic's book is the story of the bond she formed with the dog who would become 8 State Hurricane Kate. She said she started writing Kate's story so the dog wouldn't be forgotten, and to tell the stories of the Katrina survivors, the animals and people that she and Kate met on their journey. Along the way, Pavlovic said she was inspired to continue writing because she hoped the book would help her find Kate's original family.

Kate's family was never found, but the response she's gotten to Kate's story has driven Pavlovic to create the "Not Without My Dog Resource and Record Book."

"After my journey with Kate, I stayed connected to many people I met in Louisiana. One thing people said over and over was that they wanted all their dog's records in one place. I realized a need for that and created this workbook," Pavlovic said.

The book includes a records section, resources and tips for understanding dogs better. The resources section includes information on how to use a microchip effectively, how to prevent a dog from getting lost, how to make a disaster plan for your family and pets, traveling with a dog and basic first aid tips. The hardcover book has a wire binding to lay flat for writing, archive-quality pages for inserting photos, tabbed pages marking individual sections, and a sealed pocket for storing records.

"Not Without My Dog" retails for $28.95 and is available at and at Nutzy Mutz & Crazy Catz on Midvale Boulevard, where Pavlovic will be signing books on Saturday. She's bringing a special guest with her, one of her rescue dogs, Chase.

"Chase loves to work a room," Pavlovic said. "I always say he should be a greeter at Walmart."
