The animals that daily surround Dodgeville artist Audrey Christie appear, impish and friendly, in her multicolored woodcuts.
Christie is a carver, “using an 18th-century art form on cherry wood and paints with gouache to achieve her unique style,” according to her studio website, shorthorse.com.
The woodcuts reveal Christie’s affection for her adopted home (she’s from Chicago) and the animals she shares it with. In an artist’s statement, Christie calls her 1850 farmstead a “lush green chaos” and her “idea of paradise.”
Her work is full of that world: a fat, stripy cat lounging on the grass; a bunny huddled in the snow; a shy horse; a confident pig. A German shepherd’s face is tinged in purples, while a rooster in a cut called “Rare Breed” seems to have a rainbow-colored plume flying from its head.
Christie shares the December show at Absolutely Art on Atwood Avenue with Michael Hecht, who, for this show, created protraits in paper inspired by an artist he admires, Amedeo Modigliani. A reception for both artists on Friday will feature music by A.J. Love with Cadillac Rob and Billy McDuffee, and food from Bunky’s Café.
