A second location of the Venezuelan/Latin American restaurant La Taguara opened in the Cardinal Bar Wednesday in the former spot of the short-lived Cortadito Express.

Jeykell Badell, who opened the original La Taguara at 3502 East Washington Ave., last summer, said he wanted a "soft opening" of the Cardinal outpost, 418 E. Wilson St., where he is offering a scaled back menu that includes all of La Taguara's appetizers, along with chicken wings and desserts.

The annex also sells the first and second most popular dishes at the East Wash location: The Venezuelan national dish, pabellon, a plate of black beans, shredded beef, rice and deep-fried sweet plantains topped with cheese and an arepa, or Venezuelan flatbread; and cachapa con queso y carne mechada, a sweet corn pancake filled with Venezuelan cheese and meat.

The "bike up, walk up" sandwich shop and cafe, Cortadito Express, with access in front of and inside the bar, closed last September after a five-month run.
