The Loire Valley produces more white wine than any other region in France, and those wines can be very diverse. For example, Muscadet, an appellation in the western part of the Loire Valley near the Atlantic Ocean, is known for its dry, crisp white wines made from melon de Bourgogne grapes. In contrast, Touraine, a large appellation in the center of the Loire Valley, is home to different styles of whites that can be made from a variety of grapes including chenin blanc, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot gris. Description • This small-production white comes from the appellation of Muscadet Sèvre & Maine (also spelled Sèvre et Maine), the source of some of the best whites in Muscadet. Another sign of high quality is that the wine was bottled sur lie, a process that produces more flavorful wines. This is a bone-dry white that’s light and crisp. It has a clean, inviting aroma and the refreshing taste of lemons. It would be perfect with oysters and other shellfish.

Domaine Paul Buisse 2016 Touraine Sauvignon Blanc

Bought • Whole Foods, 1601 South Brentwood Boulevard, in October for $12.99

Description • This zesty, easy-to-drink white, which is made from 100 percent sauvignon blanc, is a medium-bodied wine that tastes of refreshing grapefruit and other citrus flavors. While it has the distinctive grassy and herbaceous characteristics of sauvignon blanc, it’s not as strongly flavored as those from New Zealand. This is also a refreshing wine that would go with fish, chicken and green vegetables.
