In 1912, the British liner R.M.S. Titanic, dubbed "unsinkable," struck an iceberg and sank into the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage. The maritime disaster took the lives of over 1500 passengers and crew, due mostly to a shortage of lifeboats and a lack of adequate emergency procedures. The ship was discovered in 1985, split into two sections and resting in a canyon 12,000 feet below the surface.
