A Holmen mother is accused of abusing her 9-year-old son for failing to care for his infant brother.
The child told social workers and police May 15 that he’s responsible for caring for the 4-month-old child daily while mother Sandy Xiong sleeps, according to the complaint filed Thursday in La Crosse County Circuit Court.
The boy said he isn’t strong enough to hold the infant but that Xiong slaps and yells at him when he wakes her for help, the complaint states.
He also said that he is struck when he doesn’t change a diaper correctly and that his mother won’t listen when he tries to explain that he’s too young to know how to care for an infant.
The boy also said Xiong hit him with a coat hanger and hit the infant once in the stomach while he was crying, according to the complaint.
Xiong, 24, told police she yelled at her son when he dropped the infant and that he is jealous of the attention given to the infant. She said she “disciplined” her son but denied abusing him, according to the complaint.
Xiong was charged Thursday with physical abuse of a child. She returns to court for a preliminary hearing at a later date.
