Honors: Madison’s Nickolas A. Butler has been chosen the 2010 winner of the Lumberyard Magazine’s Roark Prize in Poetry. Butler’s poems, including “In Defense of Light Beer,” “Bikini” and “Half-Life of Textbook,” will be featured exclusively in the magazine’s June issue.

Six Madison athletes earned honors in the 2010 Special Olympics State Winter Games, held Jan. 30-31 in Wausau. Sarah Bleecker, Jill Mitchell and Raimond Holschuh all earned first-place awards in speed skating events as well as other awards. In addition, Mark Vroman and Christopher G. Johnson earned second-, third- and fourth-place speed skating awards. And Signe Bergersen took fifth place in three alpine skiing events. More than 300 athletes participated.

Bob Paffel of Cumberland was inducted into the Wisconsin Auctioneer Hall of Fame during the Wisconsin Auctioneers Association conference held in January in Wisconsin Dells. And Alice Brandau of Kendall, who works with her husband Bob in Brandau-Hill Auctions and Brandau Livestock, was the first inductee into the Wisconsin Auctioneers Auxiliary Hall of Fame.

Student honors: Two elementary students from Edgewood Campus School, Madeline Wall and Claire Parker, recently won awards from the Gov. Nelson Dewey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for essays they wrote on the transcontinental railroad.

Scholarships available: The Italian Workmen’s Club of Madison is offering several scholarships in the amounts of $1,000 and $500 to graduating seniors from Dane County. Eligible students must be of Italian heritage and planning to continue their educations at a college or technical school. Applications, due no later than April 15, are available at area high school guidance offices or can be downloaded from the I.W.C. website at www.iwcmadison.com. For more information, contact I.W.C. Class reunion: The 45th reunion of Madison East High School’s Class of 1965 will be held on Saturday, July 24, at Kavanaugh’s Esquire Club, 1025 N. Sherman Ave., beginning at 11 a.m. Registration and cocktails will be followed by a buffet lunch at noon, at a cost of $10 per person. Checks, made out to the Class of 1965, may be mailed to Duane and Linda Olson, 721 Westlawn Drive, Cottage Grove, WI 53527, by June 15.
