Scrapbook: Attic Angel Association volunteers honored

Honors: Two Attic Angel Association volunteers - Susie Drane and Mary Sue Burbach - have been named outstanding volunteer fundraisers for their campaign to build The Haven memory care unit at Attic Angel Place. Both women are decades-long Attic Angel volunteers who have donated more than 11,000 volunteer hours between them. They will be honored Friday at the Overture Center as part of the National Philanthropy Day celebration, sponsored by the Greater Madison Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Local children's author Amy Recob has received a Moonbeam Award for her book, "The BugaBees: Friends with Food Allergies." Recob, of Middleton, is a marketing communications professional. The Moonbeam Awards, sponsored by The Jenkins Group, recognize quality children's books and annually draw about a thousand entries from the English-speaking world.

Nancy J. Bois of Madison, a member of John Bell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a second-place national winner in the DAR's American Heritage Committee fiber arts contest. Deerfield's Marilyn Knipfer, also a John Bell Chapter member, took a third-place award in the acrylic art and sculpture category.

Dr. Phil Collins, a Madison native and graduate of Madison Memorial High School who is now an associate professor of Christian eduction ministries at Taylor University in Upland, Ind., recently received the 2009 Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award from Taylor.

Gene Markley, a 1952 graduate of Richland Center High School, was named outstanding alum at the school's recent homecoming. Following graduation, Markley served in the U.S. Marine Corps before completing his education in California and Wisconsin. Returning to California, he led mountain outings for the Sierra Club - including 14 Arctic expeditions - and ultimately received the club's outstanding service and leadership awards. He authored several books related to mountain expeditions, and was honored by the U.S. Marine Corps for community service work.

Military News: Madison native Joseph Olson, commanding officer of the U.S.S. Green Bay, will be the guest speaker at the upcoming Madison Navy League meeting. Olson is a graduate of Madison Memorial High School and UW-Madison who earned his commission through the Naval ROTC program. The U.S.S. Green Bay is Olson's sixth surface ship assignment, and first as commanding officer.
