The Columbia County District Attorney’s Office has filed a felony battery charge against an inmate accused of attacking a sergeant at Columbia Correctional Institution in August.

Joshua Q. Thomas, 29, faces a single count of battery by prisoner following an Aug. 14 incident at CCI in which a correctional officer was struck with a lunch tray.

A Columbia County Sheriff’s Office detective was dispatched to Divine Savior Healthcare where he met the sergeant, who said he had been in the day room while lunch was being served. While he was looking down, he was struck across the face.

The sergeant suffered a cut across his nose and wasn’t able to hear out of his left ear due to a ruptured tympanic membrane, according to the criminal complaint.

Security footage shows the sergeant speaking with an inmate at the end of the lunch line when Thomas approached, hit him with the tray and walked away.

Thomas is serving a nine-year prison sentence from a Milwaukee County Circuit Court case for armed robbery. If convicted of the new charge, Thomas faces an additional sentence of up to six years.

Thomas is scheduled for an initial appearance in Columbia County Circuit Court on Nov. 29.
