A Westfield man has been charged with felony child abuse following an investigation into a 1-year-old hospitalized for head trauma in late August.

Shane Blankenship, 33, was charged on Monday in Marquette County Circuit Court with counts of child abuse intentionally causing great bodily harm, first-degree reckless injury, along with felony possession of marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the criminal complaint, the mother of the 1-year old came home to the residence where she lived with Blankenship on Aug. 27 and found the child had been injured. She took the child to Moundview Memorial Hospital, and the child was then transferred to UW Children’s Hospital to be treated for head trauma.

The following day Blankenship was arrested for violation of probation and an investigation into the suspected abuse began, involving the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Department of Human Services, and Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Madison Crime Laboratory.

Official charges were filed against Blankenship by Marquette County District Attorney’s Office Oct. 2, a week after the child had been released from the UW Madison Hospital to an in-patient facility for further recovery.

Blankenship is scheduled to appear in Marquette County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon for an initial appearance and bond hearing.

If convicted, Blankenship faces a possible sentence of more than 50 years in prison for the two most serious offenses.
