An Illinois man wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting a child was arrested in Beloit on Tuesday after police got a tip through the local Crime Stoppers.

Raynoldo Mendez, 42, South Beloit, Ill., was taken into custody without incident at a residence in the 1800 block of Harrison Avenue, Beloit police said.

"We received a tip through the Greater Beloit Area Crime Stoppers about Mendez' possible location," said Lt. John Kaltenbrun. "The Violent Crime Interdiction Team and the U.S. Marshals task force worked together to arrest Mendez, who chose to come out of the residence basement."

Nobody was hurt during the arrest but a marshal accidentally discharged a gun.

Mendez was charged in November with second-degree sexual assault of a child and exposing a child to harmful materials, with the alleged crimes committed in September.
