A stranger reportedly tried to pull a woman into an elevator in a Downtown apartment building Tuesday morning, police said.

The 27-year-old man was detained by police but had not yet been tentatively charged in the incident that occurred at about 10:15 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Johnson Street, said Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

DeSpain said other people heard screams and came to the aid of the 22-year-old woman as the man threw her into the elevator after the two struggled on the ground floor of the building. Others were able to prevent the elevator door from closing, and then kept the man in the elevator after he released the woman.

The man does not live in the building where the assault occurred, police said.
