A Madison woman has been sued by the state for allegedly running an unlicensed debt adjustment service.

The suit against Laura Schuster was filed Friday and announced Wednesday by the Department of Justice.

According to the lawsuit:

Schuster operated Midwest Homeowner Solutions LLC, a company that was notified in 2010 by the Department of Financial Institutions that it was operating illegally because no license was obtained to conduct business.

DFI ordered Schuster and the company to refund all fees to its customers and pay a $10,000 fine, neither of which was done.

Further orders and hearing notices were ignored by Schuster, and she in turn filed a petition to have the orders ruled invalid. The petition was dismissed.

In 2011, DFI dissolved the company because it didn't file required documents, a situation separate from the orders about not getting a license.
