A Fitchburg man who was clocked at 143 miles per hour Sunday night on Highway 18/151 near Barneveld lost control of his car and crashed, then was arrested for drunken driving, authorities reported.
Daniel Sandoval Arandia, 29, also was tentatively charged with felony eluding and cited for doing 143 mph in a 65 mph zone, the Iowa County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
A Barneveld police officer reported seeing a 2005 Infiniti speeding westbound on Highway 18/151 near exit 58 at about 6:40 p.m. Sunday.
The officer attempted a traffic stop but the driver didn't stop until he lost control of the car at Pikes Peak Road in the town of Brigham, according to the release.
The car went into a ditch and caused a grass fire under the car.
"The fire was extinguished before any damage was done to the car," the release said.
