A man masturbating outside early Thursday morning near Broom and State Streets was arrested by Madison police a short time later when he tried to find an unlocked car to sleep in.

Dave Hendrickson, 56, no address, was tentatively charged with public indecency, according to a news release from the Madison Police Department.

A witness to Hendrickson's activity called police at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

"When the witness encountered Hendrickson in an alleyway he continued his activities without a pause," said Officer Howard Payne.

The witness started directing college-aged women away from the area so they wouldn't be exposed to the exposed man.

"Officers asked the witness if he was sure what he saw, and he said 'I am 100 percent confident of what the suspect was doing, but I wasn't going to stick around,'" Payne said.

Police found Hendrickson in an underground parking garage near the 600 block of Langdon Street after another caller told police he was trying to get into vehicles.

"He was looking to sleep inside a car," Payne said. "Officers arrived before Hendrickson was successful in finding an unlocked car."
