It's not Dodge City that needs a new sheriff, but Dodge County.
With Sheriff Todd Nehls retiring on March 8, Gov. Scott Walker is looking for applicants wanting to put on the sheriff's badge for about the next two years.
Nehls has served as Dodge County sheriff since January 2003, after being elected in late 2002 and re-elected in 2006 and 2010.
The appointed sheriff will serve through Jan. 5, 2015; the next election for sheriff is in November 2014.
Walker said in a news release on Tuesday the successful applicant must live in Dodge County at the time the appointment becomes effective.
Applications can be found here.
Application materials must be received by noon on March 5. For more information, contact Eric Esser, director of gubernatorial appointments, at 608-266-1212.
