A Minnesota bicyclist taking part in a Vernon County bike event died on Saturday from what authorities said was most likely a medical problem.

Todd Peterson, 59, of Faribault, was pronounced dead at the scene during the Kickapoo Kicker event, according to a news release from the Vernon County Sheriff's Office.

Another bicyclist found an unresponsive Peterson lying next to his bicycle on the shoulder of Railroad Avenue just south of Cherry Grove Road in the town of Viroqua.

"Mr. Peterson was wearing a helmet but the cause of death appeared to be unrelated to any type of head trauma," said Sheriff John Spears in the release.

Emergency personnel were on the scene within minutes to administer CPR, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The incident remains under investigation.
