Staff at a southwest side gas station heard a loud bang on Thursday, thinking it was outside. But it was in the men's room: Someone shot the toilet.

The Madison Police Department said in a news release the incident happened at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Kelly Williamson Mobil, 901 S. Gammon Road.

"Some of the store staff walked outside to investigate after hearing the loud bang," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "They saw nothing."

A short time later, police said, a customer came in and left a note, indicating the bathroom toilet was in need of repair.

"An employee went to investigate and found the toilet was beyond repair," DeSpain said. "It was shattered."

An officer recovered bullet fragments and a shell casing.
