Millions of Americans have taken out loans to help pay for college, hoping that the debt would pave the way to a better life. For many borrowers, that debt has actually kept them from achieving financial prosperity.

In "The Cost of Opportunity," a new podcast mini-series from the Cap Times, investigative reporter Katelyn Ferral sits down with Wisconsinites to talk about their student debt and how it has affected their careers, their well-being and their relationships.

In this first episode, Ferral speaks with Jamie McClendon, a criminal defense attorney who lives in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek. McClendon talks about how her 12 loans have changed the path of her career in law, and what it was like to enter default on one of them.
