City of Madison, Dane County and state of Wisconsin government offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday for the New Year's holiday.

City of Madison taxpayers hustling to get their 2009 property taxes paid in person at the city treasurer's office should do so by Wednesday, because the office is closed on Thursday, the last day payment can be made to be counted as a deduction on 2009 income tax returns.

If paying by mail, make sure the postmark of the payment mailing is no later than Dec. 31.

"We issue receipts dated based on the postmark on the payment, so payments in an envelope postmarked Dec. 31 will have a receipt dated Dec. 31," said city treasurer Dave Gawenda.

Several state government offices also are closed Monday, Dec. 28, as part of the furlough of state employees.

According to the Department of Administration's furlough calendar for all state departments, the Department of Financial Institutions is closed Monday, all walk-in service centers for the Department of Natural Resources are closed and most Department of Workforce Development offices are closed, but the unemployment insurance call centers are open and operational.

Schools are closed this week as part of the winter break.

School will be back in session on Monday, Jan. 4, except for colleges.

Madison College (aka Madison Area Technical College) starts its spring semester on Jan. 11 while UW-Madison and Edgewood College will begin spring semester on Jan. 19.
