KINGWOOD, Texas—Dean Richard Friday, 82, died Sept. 11, 2017, in Kingwood, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
Dean was born in Madison, Wis., and in his early teens moved to Baraboo, Wis., where he was a standout forward for the Baraboo Thunderbirds basketball team and helped his father build prize-winning racecars. Dean met the love of his life, Jean Stieve, in the library of the Baraboo High School. They were high school prom King and Queen in 1953 and married in 1956. Dean remained utterly devoted to Jean his entire life.
Dean began his career working as a welder. While also serving in the National Guard he felt led to join the U.S. Army in 1961. After a distinguished 20-year career, he retired from military service and worked as a security specialist at Lockheed Martin in Austin, Texas, where he oversaw security for top-secret projects. Dean was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church for 28 years and volunteered with the Red Cross. He adored his children and grandchildren and treasured family gatherings above all else.
Dean leaves his wife of 60 years, Jean (Stieve) Friday; their four children and their spouses and 11 grandchildren, David and Kate (Miller) Friday of Austin and children Ryan and Austin; Bob and Leia (Ketterer) Friday of Kingwood and children Sam and Becca; Paul and Diane (Friday) Begala of McLean, Va., and children John, Billy, Charlie and Patrick; and Ron and Karla (Harmon) Friday of Atlanta and children Travis, Steven and Reegan.
A visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at KINGWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 22800 Highway 59 N, Kingwood, TX 77339. A Memorial Service will be held 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, at ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 727 8th St., Baraboo, WI 53913 followed by a dinner reception. All are welcome. Interment will occur at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C., at a date to be announced. Remembrances in Dean’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association at Alz.org or the American Red Cross at RedCross.org.
