MOUNT HOREB—Philip D. Halverson, age 89, of Mount Horeb, Wis., died on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at the Aurora Medical Center in Oconomowoc, Wis.
He was born June 16, 1928, in Madison, Wis., to Milo A. and Idella L. (Femrite) Halverson. Phil graduated from Stoughton High School in 1946.
He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army serving from 1946-1948. He was stationed with the Army of occupation in Japan, assigned to the Army Stars and Stripes newspaper. He was a member of the newspaper sports staff and traveled throughout Japan and the South Pacific covering armed forces athletic events.
Phil was united in marriage to Ruth I. Moskopf on Aug. 14, 1954, in Kenosha, Wis.
In 1952, he received a B.S. degree at UW-Whitewater and from the UW-Madison a M.S. degree in School Administration. He worked at several schools: in 1952-1953 at Milton Schools, 1953-1957 at D.C. Everest School in Schofield, 1957-1961 at Hartland School and from 1961-1990 with the Mount Horeb Schools.
While at the Mount Horeb School District, he served as Elementary and Middle School Principal, and District Coordinator of Curriculum. Other interim assignments included brief stints as acting high school principal, athletic director and district administrator.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Living Christ in Madison, Wis.; from 1964-1992, was president of the Mount Horeb School Board; from 1970-1978, was on the Dane County Library Board; from 1991-2012, was on the Mount Horeb Utility Board; and from 1962-2012, was a member of the Mount Horeb Rotary Club. Phil’s leadership and administrative skills will be missed by everyone in the Mount Horeb community.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth; his daughters, Mary (Jeff) Lukehart of McMinnville, Ore., Marcia (Randy) Chambers of Lancaster, and Karen (Jeff) Taylor of Ixonia; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Halverson of Ripon; niece, Jennifer (Ed) Tokar of Lorain, Ohio; and great-nephews, Steven and Joey Tokar of Lorain, Ohio, and Levi Halverson of Malone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill; and a nephew, Eric Halverson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at the LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE LIVING CHRIST, 110 N. Gammon Road, Madison, Wis., with Pastor Daniel Kowert officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at the ELLESTAD CAMACHO FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th St., Mount Horeb, Wis., and from 10 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. on Monday at the church. Burial with full military honors will be at Mount Horeb Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or plants, a memorial may be given to the Mount Horeb Public Library.
