MADISON - "God of mercy and love, grant your servant and priest a glorious place at your heavenly banquet, for you made him here on earth a faithful minister of your work and sacrament."

The Rev. James R. Lins, age 75, entered into eternal life on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013. He became a resident of St. Mary's Care Center in Madison, on April 23, 2012. He was born on June 9, 1938, in Spring Green, the son of John J. and Rose M. (Hetzel) Lins. Father Lins attended St. Luke Catholic School in Plain. He graduated from Salvatorian Seminary at St. Nazianz, Wis., in 1958. He then continued his collegiate studies in philosophy and theology at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., where he graduated in 1964. He was ordained a priest by Bishop William P. O'Connor on May 30, 1964, at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Madison, and celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Plain on Sunday, May 31, 1964.

Father Lins served the Diocese of Madison as Associate Pastor at St. John the Baptist Parish in Waunakee, St. Dennis Parish in Madison, St. John the Baptist Parish in Jefferson, St. Joseph Parish in Baraboo, and as part-time Instructor of Religion at the Academy of St. Benedict in Middleton. He served as Pastor at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Hazel Green, St. Joseph Parish in Waterloo, Wis.I, and 28 years as Pastor at St. Matthew Parish in Shullsburg, Wis., with missions of St. Peter Parish in Elk Grove, and Our Lady of Hope Parish in Seymour. He retired in 2009. During his years of service to the Diocese of Madison, Father Lins was involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society in several parishes. He always had great compassion for the poor.

He is survived by a brother, Dan (Teresa) Lins of Plain; seven sisters, Elizabeth Brokish of Dickeyville, Sister Evelyn Lins, OP of Racine, Bernadine (Vincent) Limmex, Donna Golner, and Barbara (Paul) Johnson, all of Spring Green, Marian (Stan) Schrank of Bend, Ore., and Virginia (Dan) Harp of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Lins of Spring Green, and Sue (Bob) Lins Kadechka of Youngtown, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Father Lins was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Donald, John A., and Ralph Lins; two sisters, Florence Lins and Mary Lins; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Brokish and Clarence Golner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at ST. LUKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1240 Nachreiner Avenue in Plain, Wis., at 3 p.m. The Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, will be the celebrant with Father Mike Resop as homilist. Private burial services will be held in St. Luke Cemetery in Plain.
