MOUNT HOREB - John A. Richard, age 92, of Mount Horeb, died on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at his home.
He was born on Aug. 15, 1920, in Brodhead to Alfred and Anna (Gutman) Richard. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. On May 10, 1946, he married Jeanette M. Mickelson at the Mount Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church parsonage.
John and Jeanette made Swiss cheese at the Miller Cheese Factory in Woodford, and the Barber Cheese Factory in Barneveld. In 1955, they started farming in Barneveld where they farmed until 1982. They also worked for the Ryser Cheese Factory in Mount Horeb for eight years.
John was a member of Mount Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Barneveld American Legion Post. He was a former member of the West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church where he served in the Church Council.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jeanette; his children, Patricia (Neil) Ranney of Barneveld, Judith (John) Swenson of Barneveld, Diane Hefty of Mount Horeb, and Joni (Dale) Cleary of Mount Horeb; 10 grandchildren, Jim (Maria) Ranney, Steve (Pitt Fagan) Ranney, Tami (Joe) Reeson, Marcus (Jodi) Hefty, Jessi (Justin Heider), John and Jared Swenson, Michael, Thomas (Jessica Wittenwyler) and Kyle Cleary; 10 great-grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Ranney, Elora Daane, Haedyn, and Hudson Swenson, Levi, Ashley, Colin Reeson, Ellie and Grace Hefty; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Richard Jr.; four sisters, Olga Nussman, Helen Holder, Mary Aebly and Margaret Rauls; and two infant brothers.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at MOUNT HOREB EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH with Pastor John Twiton officiating. Burial will follow at West Blue Mounds Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. on Saturday at Mount Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church.
