FITCHBURG—Karen A. Showers, age 75, of Fitchburg, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018. She was born on Jan. 1, 1943, in Stoughton, the daughter of Alvin and Martha (Nelson) Mikkelson.
Karen graduated from Stoughton High School in 1961, and then MATC in 1963. In 1966, Karen began her career with the State of Wisconsin as a youth counselor at the Wisconsin School for Girls where she met her husband, Raymond Showers. Karen (Mikkey) Showers continued serving the Wisconsin Department of Corrections and Division of Adult Institutions. After 46 years of service, she retired from Oakhill Correctional Institution in December 2012. She took pride in her work and valued the friendships she made over the years. As one of the oldest children from a family of 13 children, Karen fully embraced her gift for caring for others. Her love and guidance, ability to fulfill a need, and endless generosity were her mission. There are no words that can summarize what she has meant to so many. There is no measure to the number of lives Karen touched. Her caring and thoughtfulness will be greatly missed.
Karen is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Craig) Berkan; grandchildren, Jillian Berkan and Carmen Berkan; seven brothers, Bjarne (Marilyn) Mikkelson, Eric Mikkelson, Leif (Gloria) Mikkelson, Carl Mikkelson, Haakon (Rachel) Mikkelson, Harald Mikkelson and Thor Mikkelson; three sisters, Marilyn (Ronald) Weiland, Sonja Moore and Ingrid (Ed) Showers; and numerous nieces and nephews; step-children, Edward (Ingrid) Showers, Linda Olson, Sandra (William) Anderson, Richard (Lisa) Showers, Barbara (Jeff) McCredie, Robert (Susan) Showers, and their families; and her treasured sister-in-law, Jean (Showers) Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Showers; brother, A. Knute Mikkelson; and sister, Borghild Eldridge.
