The World’s Largest Brat Fest now also can claim the world’s largest brat.

Brat Fest officials said they grilled a brat measuring 54 feet 10 inches to surpass the record brat of 52 feet, 2 inches set last October in Prescott.

The record, however, is unofficial because it was not sanctioned by any official organization, said Tim Metcalfe, Brat Fest president.

The monster brat made by Johnsonville Sausage consisted of 28 pounds of pork, and fit perfectly on a bun made by Pan-O-Gold using 45 pounds of dough.

The brat was grilled on a handmade cinder block grill. It took about 20 volunteer grillers to rotate the brat, which took roughly 30 minutes to cook.

“We turned the brat every five to eight minutes, very carefully so as not to split the casing,” said Johnathan Pleitner, Johnsonville’s research and development scientist.

Pan-O-Gold also produced the bun used in last year’s event in Prescott. “This bun was the largest we’ve ever made, using 26 pounds of flour,” said Dan Futato, vice president and general manager for Pan-O-Gold.

Once the brat was rolled from the grill onto the bun, it was cut and served up in 110 sandwiches at $4 each. Proceeds are to go to the Oklahoma tornado relief efforts.

Brat Fest activities are expected to raise more than $100,000 for nearly 90 Madison-area charities that assisted in the four-day event, which runs through Monday.
