A familiar sight on Madison streets for decades now are the little green and yellow Lake Mills Cleaner trucks.

Lake Mills Cleaners is one of the few who do it the old-fashioned way, going door-to-door to pick up and drop off cleaning throughout the Madison area.

Former UW basketball coach Steve Yoder, who was hired to do Lake Mills’ radio ads, would boast, "I have so much trust in Lake Mills Cleaners that I give them a key to my house."

It’s a sad time at the cleaners, located just north of the village. The founder of the business and longtime Wisconsin Badger booster Dick Tarnutzer passed away Sunday evening at the age of 77.

Dick was not only a good businessman and a longtime advocate for his beloved Lake Mills, but he had season tickets for both the Badgers’ football and basketball teams for some 60 years. He contributed mightily to children’s causes and helped out high school atheltics whenever he could, plus served on the firing squad of the local American Legion club.

The Claussen Funeral Home in Lakes Mills is in charge of arrangements. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Lake Mills Moravian Church, with visitation from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the church. The family is asking that memorials be made either to the church or to the Richard W. Tarnutzer Memorial Scholarship Fund.
