It seems like nobody ice skates anymore. When I was a boy, I and all my friends knew how to enjoy skating. The city provided a large, lighted rink with a cozy warming house and nice music from loud speakers. It was "the" place to go after supper, and a great place to meet girls, too. We even "skate danced."
Today's young people have TV, games, computers and no desire to go outdoors, especially if it's cold. They're more likely to sit around, and maybe eat some snacks. Our nation's high percentage of obese people should not be a surprise to anyone.
I live on Lake Wisconsin and, though the ice had been like a mirror, I've yet to see a skater.
