State wildlife officials are predicting big things for the sturgeon-spearing season, which starts in a few weeks.
The Department of Natural Resources has seen a resurgence of sturgeon weighing 150 pounds or more. And DNR crews say they frequently deal with live sturgeon that weigh over 200 pounds.
DNR spokesman Ron Bruch says it all adds up to one thing: It's only a matter of time before records start to fall.
The largest harvested sturgeon was caught six years ago. It weighed 188 pounds.
Last year, a woman set a record for the largest fish ever harvested by a woman spearer. It weighed 169 pounds and was nearly 7 feet long.
The spearing season runs from Feb. 13 through Feb. 28, or until preset harvest caps are reached.
