Dear Editor: Every so often there is an action that has a perfect reaction. And so it is for an old friend, professor Bassam Shakhashiri. He is the 2018 recipient of the prestigious Grady-Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public. It was announced by the American Chemical Society, adding his name to an august list that includes renowned journalists, Nobel laureates and authors.

Bassam is a past president of the society. We in Wisconsin know him for his nationally broadcast show, "Once Upon a Christmas Cheery in the Lab of Shakhashiri." The good doctor was also named the first William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea at UW-Madison in 2001. He has other awards, well deserved, and has been teaching young and old at UW since 1970.

Congratulations to an exemplary teacher, entertainer, showman and, above all, human being. It is an honor to know him.
