Cycling: Marian University sweeps time trials, snags omnium crown
USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals
Marian University swept the men's and women's Division 1 time trials Sunday at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, wrapping up the team omnium title (best overall finish) at the three-day event held in the Madison area.
The Indianapolis school leapfrogged Lees-McRae (N.C.) College in the final of three events factored in the team omnium competition. The University of California-Davis was third.
The University of Wisconsin cycling team finished 10th (out of 51) in the omnium competition after its men's team took last out of 17 schools in Sunday's time trial, while the women's team was eighth in the 12-school field.
The time trial course started and finished near the Trek Bicycle headquarters in Waterloo and ran southeast before reaching a turnaround point north of Lake Mills.
Whitman (Wash.) College used a victory in the Division 2 women's team time trial and a third-place finish in the men's event to win its second straight team omnium competition. Mesa State (Colo.) College won the men's time trial to secure a runner-up finish in the omnium competition, ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
UW-Platteville finished seventh in the men's time trial and eighth overall in the Division 2 omnium competition, which had a total of 46 schools. UW-Whitewater was 15th and UW-Eau Claire was 21st.
