Eric Sogard drove in two runs with a fourth-inning triple off left-hander Dario Alvarez and the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in the teams’ exhibition opener Friday at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix.

The split-squad victory went to rookie Corbin Burnes, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander who struck out two in a scoreless inning. Burnes, 23, has compiled an 11-3 record with a 1.74 ERA in two seasons since being drafted out of St. Mary’s (Calif.) in the fourth round in 2016.

Nine Brewers pitchers went an inning each and limited the Cubs to five hits, striking out six.

Domingo Santana went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a walk for the Brewers.

The Brewers added a second win with a 6-5 split-squad victory over the Giants in Scottsdale.

Travis Shaw knocked in two runs and Keston Hiura, the Brewers’ first-round pick in June, had two hits and knocked in a run.
