Linebacker Derek Watt from Pewaukee, the younger brother of University of Wisconsin standout defensive end J.J. Watt, will be joining the Badgers sooner than expected.

Derek Watt initially committed to a grayshirt offer, meaning he would not join UW until January 2012. But an injury to another commit -- tight end Eric Steffes of St. Mary's Springs in Fond du Lac -- has opened up a spot for Watt in the fall of 2011, Badgernation.com reported on Wednesday.

Watt, 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, is considered to be an outside linebacker prospect.

Steffes will apparently have shoulder surgery following the hockey season and will now enroll at UW in January 2012.
